What does the phrase digital native mean?

Digital native is someone who has been born after 1995 and has grown up with technology

What is web 2.0 and who coined the phrase?

Web 2.0 (David Gauntlett 2002) means the new version of the world wide web where people can see different websites like social networking sites and things can be downloaded and the user can interact with the site and other sites were static and linear with just writing and still images

These relate to Dead Mans Shoes because there is more ways of advertising and how films are distributed which allow us to watch films on our smartphones and technology

VLOG3 script

Introduction

Hello and welcome, my name is Dominic and today I will be presenting you with my VLOG3. I will be talking about gender, age, lifestyle and spending power for the film This Is England.

The reader

Steve, 25, lives by himself in his own house where he loves to hang out with friends and play xbox.

He loves going to the cinema to see a lot of the latest films which have been released where he often attends his local cinema at least once a week with his close friends. He loves being creative either on the computer or off it where he has a high passion for designing and creating a variety of things. Although his disposable income isn't higher than a lot of other people he still continues to spend it on what he loves doing which is buying xbox games, fuel for his car to go out with his friends and get to his job and going to the pub with his friends for a drink. He takes pride in his appearance and has high expectations for himself with big desires of being promoted at his work or even getting a better job which will pay better.

Gender
1. The gender of the film is aimed at 70% males and 30% females with the majority of people who watch This Is England are males because a lot of the film is to do with violence, racism, robbing and threatening people and comes from a lot of male perspective in the film with it being linked to the genre which is a crime/drama which is stereotypically aimed at males with most females wanting to see romantic films. Although the film is mainly aimed at males it is also aimed at females to view as in the film there are a lot of women characters used and it allows us to see that the film isn't just aimed at violence and that it does have some relationships in it. It also shows how women used to dress and how they acted and especially how they acted around some characters who are racist and violence and it doesn't just show how males grew up but women as well.

Age
2. The age of the target audience has a large variety because although the film is rated an 18+ it is viewed by a lot of 15 year olds as they can relate to the character and then can see how he is growing up and makes stupid mistakes by hanging out with the wrong people and doing the wrong things but towards the end he learns this and changes his ways.  Many teenagers can relate as the film has used a main character that isn’t much younger than them and it does learn them and we can see that violence and racism is wrong and it shows us that we should know who our true friends are and not ones who are going to lead us into trouble. A lot of the audience who watch the film are over 18 because it was rated this because of the violence, swearing and racism which is in its which doesn’t just show a boy growing up and hanging round the wrong people because it’s the adults who he looks up to which make him do and follow the people he does. For adults who watch the film it shows us that you can say and do things and it’s easy for people to follow you and make them want to stay with you so you’ve got to do the right thing and not be violent or racist.
Lifestyle

3. The lifestyle of the audience is aimed at a variety of people according to the NRS lifestyle grades like affluent achievers who are people who are going to be able to understand the film and what it’s about. They’re able to understand the different scenarios like why the big group of friends split up in the film and why the adults go round robbing stores and threatening children. Producers will be interested in watching the film because they make films as part of a living and they can take ideas and inspiration as the film may relate to theirs in the sense that it is produced on a low budget. Another lifestyle grade that may watch the film is people in urban ventures who are interested in films which have been produced near to where they live or even where they live which allows then to recognise familiar locations with them also having access to a variety of cinemas.  The lifestyle of the audience are likely to spend a lot of their disposable income instead of saving it and shopping in shops like Primark to get more for their money. What tells us this is that a lot of the people who watch it can relate because of the lifestyle that the characters have where some have enough to get by and are happy to hang out with friends. The target audience can also relate to the film in many ways because the characters in the film enjoy going out and hanging out with each other and spending money on clothes to go out and impress. They also take time with their appearance and have their hair cut into a fashionable style so they go out and impress which is something a lot of audience would do.

Spending power
4. We know who the target audience is aimed at by looking at the NRS demographic profiling system. A lot of the audience who watch the film are in B, C1, C2 and D because people who earn less money and are less educated are likely to see a movie which has been produced on a low budget and doesn’t have any famous actors in it. People who are well paid and well educated who fall under social grade A which is upper middle class where they’re likely to watch a Hollywood blockbuster because they have a big disposable income and are well educated with their favourite famous actors which are shown at big cinemas and not produced on a budget. The target audience will fall under the social grades of middle class to working class where the people in this class are likely to have less money and are less educated than people in grade A, who are upper middle class. The reason for this is that the audience will have enough money to go the cinema and see the film but they’re educated enough to understand the film and what’s happening.
Key stats:
Male 70%
Female 30%
Age 15-24 , 30-50
B,C1,C2,D 60%

Uses and Gratifications (Denis McQuail, 1972)

Four reasons that people consume media products:

1. Surveillance - Surveillance - The films tells us about information towards history and culture because it shows us about Margaret thatcher and troops in the army being sent away from England. It also shows us about how white people used to treat black people and how some people didn't like them and discriminated against them.

2. Escapism -  The film gets us away from the real world by showing us a boy who grows up and goes through all these different stages and problems in his life.

3. Building personal identity - The film allows us to fashion ourself around what is seen in the film like the different clothes which the characters wear like fedora hats ect...
The film also allows us to fashion ourself around the different soundtracks which are played like "Tainted Love by Soft Cell"

4. Building Personal Relationships - In the film we can take away from it that we shouldn't discriminate anyone from our friendship group and it doesn't matter if they're different.

LO1 Task 2 - Analysis of This Is England

Hello, My name is Dominic and I work on behalf of GMS (Global Media Supplies) Today we will be looking at This is England

Purpose - The purpose of this film is to entertain but it also educates the audience at the same time. It educates the audience with the topic of racism which is what the film is mainly about.

Genre - The genre of the film is a crime / drama as people in the film are being killed with it being linked to racism but there are also friends who are like family who fall out throughout the film.

Form - The form of the film is an independent film which is produced by Warp. The film made £5,058,600 at the box office with the film being distributed through local cinemas.

Style - The style of the film is nostalgic as we as the audience can tell that it has been set in the past by the clothes that the characters wear with the girls mostly patterned dresses with the boys wearing boots with rolled up jeans. The cars that are driven in the film also suggest when it was filmed because there are all old cars which are used with no modern cars shown at all. Another point which suggests this is because of Margaret thatcher who is shown to be the prime minister in the film and she was elected prime minister in 1979 to 1990.

The content of the film I am analysing is a story which is about a young boy who has lost his farther but finds some friends or even a family as we see but then it starts to go wrong when one of the characters come back from prison and the group of friends start to split up. The other part of the story is about racism and this is wear it educates the audience on how wrong it is and we feel sorry for the victims.

Old equilibrium: Young boy whose dad has died serving the country and he is being bullied but then joins a gang and then the leader gets out of prison and starts to rob shops and he is a racist

New equilibrium: young child fixes his ways towards the end and gets a girlfriend and hangs around with the right people and not the wrong people who do illegal things and kill their friends. The racist leader goes back to prison.

This is England - Shop scene

Location - For example this scene is shown in a shop in Grimsby

Characters and Acting Gesture - There are five characters in this scene but four of them are against the shop keeper

Costume and make up - All the characters that are coming into the shop are wearing big coats even

Props -The props that is connoted in this clip is a machete. The machete is used to strike fear into the shop keeper where the other characters can take what they want.

Lighting and colour -The light that is used in this clip is the natural light which is plain and simple which is what the film is.

Film where – It was filmed in quite a poor area which connotes the way that is happening in the economy with people having to rob shops because they can’t afford to buy things.

Acting how – The acting connotes the hatred that the characters have for the shop keeper because of his race which is what the film is about which is racism.

Wearing what – The characters are wearing big coats which is intimidating because they can hide weapons and it makes them look bigger which is meant to make people be scared of them

Location – The location which is denoted is done in pre-production which we know because there are thousands of shops but the location will need to fit in with the film which is set in a poor location. It contributes to the audiences understanding by connoting that the characters0 are from a place where not many people can afford things and they want to get like drinks and have a good time but they can’t afford to do it so instead of going out and earning it they will steal it.

Costume – The costume would have been considered in pre-production because the main character didn’t just want to walk into the shop with a machete he needed a big coat to hide this and his men wearing this also connotes their dominance by showing they can bully the shop keeper into giving them whatever they want for nothing. This contributes to the audiences understanding by associating big coats with intimidation as it makes the characters look bigger and doesn’t reveal how big they truly are.

Lighting – The lighting will have been considered in pre-production as they would have needed to decide what the lighting will be like as they could have robbed the shop at night where no one would be able to see them but they made it fit in with the story because they’re robbing the shop during the day so that they can have a good time at night. This contributes to the meaning as they went to rob the shop in broad day light connoting that they don’t really care if anyone sees them rob the shop because they hate all different races that much and have a strong dislike that they’re not bothered if people see them doing it because they see it as they’re doing people a favour as in their eyes they’re “taking jobs” from people.

Sound – The sound used in this is diegetic with all the characters speaking with no music being played in the background. We can hear the sound of the machete when it is drawn by the main character.

Shot types- There is a medium close up of the little boy when he is talking to the shop keeper which allows us as the audience to see what he is wearing which are clothes which the people he follows are wearing. This also allows us to see his face expression when he is saying racial comments we can see the hatred that he has on his face towards the shop keeper which is just like the people he follows. In relate to the medium close up of the little boy who is the main character there is a medium close up of the shop keeper when the main character calls the shopkeeper racial names. From the shopkeepers face expression we can see the look of disgust and anger, which he has for the names that he is called.

There is an over the shoulder shot of the shopkeeper where we are looking down on the little boy which shows the dominance of the shop keeper where he quite easily was about to pick him up to throw him out of the shop but he only has the dominance over the main character for so long before the main characters backup come into the shop.

This is England - Street scene

Location - This scene was shown at the end of an alley way with some stairs at the end which lead up to some flats which is where the characters fled

Characters and acting gesture - There were three teenagers/school kids who were playing football and then five other characters that are all looking angry and the gesture of combo is threatening

Costume and make up - The characters that approached the children that were playing all wore big coats which connote their dominance and make them look bigger than what they're to make people more scared of them.

Props - One of the props which are denoted in this scene is a knife. The knife is used to threaten the victims which the one of the main characters is displaying his dominance and commanding the characters he approached.

Lighting and colour - The lighting which is used is the natural light but is quite dark where we can picture the sky being grey as it has the effect and we can see that it has been raining when the camera moves onto Shaun. This connotes that something bad is happening because the colour is quite dark instead of it being light.

Filmed where - This scene was filmed at the end of an alley way which was secluded where one of the main characters was able to pull out a threatening weapon without people seeing him.

Acting how - The acting was very aggressive towards the victims with combo getting into the victims face making him worried and he's looking down on the victim which again shows his dominance.

Costume - The costume which the victims were wearing represented that they were Muslims which made them a target for one of the main characters who is racist and has something against people who aren't white.

Sound - The sound is non diegetic as there is music being played in the background to match the mood of what is happening, the music is quite sad and makes you feel sorry for the victims because the characters are just being racist.

Shot types - There is a medium close up? where we see a close up of combo's face and the anger which he has for people who aren't white we as the audience can really see this in his face expression.

We see a close up of Shaun's face because he has been brain washed into following these characters and he thinks its right what they're doing and we can see him smile as combo threatens one of the characters.

This is England - Combo Fight Scene

Location - The location of this scene is set where the characters hang out, sleep and eat. We know this because there are beds, kitchen and with them all sat around.

Characters and acting gesture - There are five characters in this scene who are Shaun, Milky, Combo, Gadget and Banjo. We see as the audience that Combo is upset which we can tell because his eyes are watering, he's biting his nails and touching the straps on his shirt because he doesn't know what to do with his hands because he's upset and getting angry.

Costume and make up - The clothes that are worn from the characters are quite relaxed with no one wearing a big coat to look bigger and be intimidating they're all in their normal casual clothes which as part of what they wear is a shirt, boots and trousers.

Props - There is a wine bottle used to smash on the head of Banjo as the others don't agree with what Combo did to Milky, the bottle was used to inflict pain but not to cause series damage.

Lighting and colour - There was a bit of natural light so we could see what was happening but quite dark which showed the danger and death of one of the characters.

Acting how - The acting is quite relaxed leading up to the incident but then we see combo who is one of the main characters start to get agitated which leads up to combo becoming angry and acting completely different to how he was a bit before and the other characters just sitting back not knowing what is about to happen.

Sound - The sound used in this scene is diegetic with us the audience actually see one of the characters being beaten by another character but we know that the sound isn't really coming from the character physically punching and kicking the other character.

Shot types - There is a close up of combo's face when he is talking to Milky where it allows us to see as the audience his face expression which is sad because he's crying and doesn't know what to do with his hands.

Production process - The locations which are used in the film will have been considered in post-production which we know because they will have found suitable places where it could be filmed because it is in such a poor/remote area with all old buildings they will have needed to find this before filming because if they was nowhere for this to be set then it wouldn't have been filmed.

The costume will have been considered pre-production because the costumes will have been decided well before production so that they could make any changes if the costume doesn't fit to the scene which is being made and any adjustments to the costume in case it doesn't fit the character and it needs to be changed.

The lighting and colour filers will have been considered in pre-production because they will be able to match the mood of the scene to the lighting like if something bad is going to happen and a character is in danger or going to die then the lighting will be dark. The colour of the scenes will have been considered in post-production because it can be altered with editing as well to change the colour if its need to be.

Roland Barthes (1977)

7 narrative codes to help us understand how a story is put together

Enigma - Puzzle/problem/question which the audience will need to solve or have information about it, helps what's happening with the narrative.

Eye-line Match - Can see through the eyes of the main character to then see what they're looking at then back to the main character- Always at the characters angle (character, what they're looking at and then back to character)

Shot reverse shot - Focuses on a character saying something then going to the other character for the answer which is used in a conversation to make it look natural.

Match on action - Create an invisible to make it look real

Movement that basically is contained across another shots

The movement tells us something is going to happen

Action Code - Action signifies some action is going to take place
Tells the audience what action is likely to followkl

Sound - The sound used in this scene is diegetic with us the audience actually see one of the characters being beaten by another character but we know that the sound isn't really coming from the character physically punching and kicking the other character.

Shot types - There is a close up of combo's face when he is talking to Milky where it allows us to see as the audience his face expression which is sad because he's crying and doesn't know what to do with his hands.

Production process - The locations which are used in the film will have been considered in post production which we know because they will have found suitable places where it could be filmed because it is in such a poor/remote area with all old buildings they will have needed to find this before filming because if they was no where for this to be set then it wouldn't have been filmed.

The costume will have been considered pre production because the costumes will have been decided well before production so that they could make any changes if the costume doesn't fit to the scene which is being made and any adjustments to the costume in case it doesn't fit the character and it needs to be changed.

The lighting and colour filers will have been considered in pre production because they will be able to match the mood of the scene to the lighting like if something bad is going to happen and a character is in danger or going to die then the lighting will be dark. The colour of the scenes will have been considered in post production because it can be altered with editing as well to change the colour if its need to be.

Round up - Use of sound

What we have learnt today:

1. Diegesis

2. Diegetic Sound

3. Non-diegetic sound

4. Foley Sound

Task 2: Analysis

Diegesis - The story world / world of narrative
How real the diegesis appears is linked to the level of verisimilitude (which means the appearance of being real)

Diegetic sound means: is sound that appears as though it is coming from within the story world of the film or tv programme

Off screen - Couldn't see the object what made the sound but the sound it made from an object that it not shown to the audience

-Dialogue
- Sound effects (includes Foley sound)

Aren't (way it is said)
Dialect (vocabulary)
Tone (How it is said, angry or calm)

These are added during production and post-production to create meaning). Sound effects dialogue in particular are planned carefully during pre-production

Non-diegetic Sound

Non-diegetic sound is sound that is clearly not coming from within the story world
-incidental music - background music played over the scene which is to make the audience realise like two people about to kiss with a slow romantic song.
-Non-diegetic sound effects

These are added at the stage of post-production to create meaning for the audience

Signifies and connotes < key term media terminology

Camera angle, location is a sign

Sound track + incidental music makes a score

One example of non-diegetic sound is a clip from kill List which connotes building up suspense making the audience realise that they're unaware of what is going to happen and that anything could happen

This clip has an example at the end of the trailer which is a non-diegetic

Investigating Audio Recorders

LO1: TASK 1 DRAFT SCRIPT

Hello, my name is Dominic and I work on behalf of GMS (Global Media Supplies) I am going to be looking at the company 20th Century Fox. Firstly there are some keys terms which you will need to know…

Conglomerate - Made up of companies - these are called subsidiaries

(Largest media conglomerates - News corp/21st Century Fox, Warner, Viacom (Paramount), CBSComcast (Universal), Sony, Disney Company).

Independent - Not owned by another company, operates are makes products by itself

(Warp is an indie company)

Cross media ownership - When a company makes more than one type of media product by owing companies that make different media...

(Another example is BBC - Radio, TV, Digital, Films).

Commercial - Makes a profit... (Most companies exist to make money)

Public Service Broadcaster - Funded by public money...(BBC and TV licence fee, channel 4 also has some PSB remit)

Joint venture - works with other companies...

(Warp and Film Four)

In terms of ownership 20th Century Fox is owned by Keith Rupert Murdoch aged 83 who was born in Australia, he has owned 20th Century Fox since 1985 after taking it over from William Fox and Joseph M. Schenck. 20th Century Fox is a commercial company which is also a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox which is a conglomerate. The company is split away from News Corporation so that they can both be managed more effectively and operate better. The company was formed by two independent companies both specializing in production and distribution and hasn’t worked with another company to produce a film. 20th Century Fox in terms of operating model is both horizontally and vertically integrated. The reason for this is that they can produce a film, distribute it and make it available for a wide audience. What allows them to do this effectively is that they own not only 21st Century Fox but Fox entertainment, News Corporation and many others which all work with each other in order to promote their products. They can use News Corporation to publish reviews about films they have produce with all the good things about It, telling people to go and watch it rather than asking or paying a newspaper to write about it. They can show adverts on their TV networks to promote the films they have produced without having to pay another company to advertise it which means they can make more profit instead of spending more on advertising. They can also put on the cover of the films they have produced from the newspapers they own like “5 Star rating, MUST SEE!” In terms of products, the company doesn’t just specialize in the production of films but it produces many other different types of media like Television channels like Foxtel, Sky and many others. 20th Century Fox also produces a lot of newspapers like the Sunday Times, The Times, the Sun and many others. It also specializes in the production of television programs like Family guy, Futurama and the Simpsons each attracting a huge audience making it very successful. 20th Century Fox is well known for making huge films like Avatar, life of pi, taken 2 and many others which have reached millions of views and millions in profit. Avatar and life of pi are both very successful as they aren’t part of a sequel with Avatar making over 2.7 Billion in profits. 20th Century fox cater for a range of audiences, producing films for children like Ice age (U rated) to films like From Hell (18 rated) but the company mainly focuses on producing films that are for under 18s because they have realised that they can attract a bigger audience than if it was limited to 18s+. In terms of market position 20th Century Fox is well known for producing films like “Wolverine” which was produced on a 90 Million dollar budget which made over 414 Million dollars in profit, “Ice age” is  huge film which they are very recognized for producing which has made over 877Million dollars in profit from a 120Million dollar budget. They are well known for 100s of films they have produced but it’s the huge profits which has been made by each of them which makes it clearly indicate the success of the company. The company is not only recognised for the success of its films but some of the newspapers it owns attract thousands of readers, with news readers picking up the newspaper every day.  They are even successful because of the TV shows they produce which have millions of viewers which they gain new fans every day and make people follow every episode that is made. The company is successful because it is known as to be the second largest major film producing company in the world, falling just behind Warner Bros. The company is also successful because it owns many companies all over the world like newspapers and TV stations in places like Africa, Asia, and Europe and nearly everywhere in the world. In terms of competitors there is one main competitor to 20th Century Fox which is Warner Bros which is considered to be the largest film producing company in the world. Warner Bros was founded on April 4th 1923 and is owned by Kevin Tsujihara. Warner Bros is considered a competitor because they are both competing to produce some of the best films in the world to gain more profit and be bigger than each other. Warner Bros isn’t just a film producing company but they also produce different types of media like television and music, it also owns it own chain of cinemas which means it has a variety of ways to distribute the films it produces to try and obtain a larger audience. 20th Century Fox stands out from the competitors because it has a larger way to distribute and advertise what is has produced. The reason for this is because it owns multiple companies all over the world for unlike Warner Bros, for instance linking back to what I said earlier it owns multiple television networks all over the world and advertise in the newspapers that it owns in Australia, America, United kingdom and everywhere else it has a newspaper.
