Diegesis - The story world / world of narrative
How real the diegesis appears is linked to the level of verisimilitude (which means the appearance of being real)
Diegetic sound means: is sound that appears as though it is coming from within the story world of the film or tv programme
Off screen - Couldn't see the object what made the sound but the sound it made from an object that it not shown to the audience
-Dialogue
- Sound effects (includes Foley sound)
Aren't (way it is said)
Dialect (vocabulary)
Tone (How it is said, angry or calm)
These are added during production and post-production to create meaning). Sound effects dialogue in particular are planned carefully during pre-production
Non-diegetic Sound
Non-diegetic sound is sound that is clearly not coming from within the story world
-incidental music - background music played over the scene which is to make the audience realise like two people about to kiss with a slow romantic song.
-Non-diegetic sound effects
These are added at the stage of post-production to create meaning for the audience
Signifies and connotes < key term media terminology
Camera angle, location is a sign
Sound track + incidental music makes a score
One example of non-diegetic sound is a clip from kill List which connotes building up suspense making the audience realise that they're unaware of what is going to happen and that anything could happen
This clip has an example at the end of the trailer which is a non-diegetic
